Description

Lake Skirö (Skirösjön) is situated in the River Em catchment in south-eastern Sweden. The lake is eutrophic and heavily affected by nutrient inputs. In august 1997 the Total P value at 7 meters depth were 550 µg/l whereas in august 2008 it was 61 µg/l. There is a strong possibility that the lake is affected by potentially toxic blue-green algae.

When sampled in 2007 the lake had a relatively large biomass of phytoplankton (3.7 mg/l) and 32% of the phytoplankton taxa were found to indicate eutrophic conditions. In 1993 to 2007 lake Skirö has throughout the period always been assessed as eutrophic or strongly eutrophic by phytoplankton. The water colour in the lake varies between 40 and 100 mg Pt/l. The lake have been sampled for physico-chemical parameters, phytoplankton, chlorophyll, benthic fauna, and macrophytes in 2009. The lake was also sampled for fish (gillnetting) in 2006 and the next occasion will be in 2011. Sampling in the lake is the responsibility of the Emå Association.
